Windermere is one of the most prestigious suburbs of Orlando, Florida. Dating back to the 1500s, this area was home of the Timucuan Indian and then the Spanish began to settling here in 1565.  The United States purchased the eastern half of the state of Florida from Spain,  and it became the 27th state of the Union in 1845.  Many of its homes and roads are strictly protected to retain the history and heritage of this unique community.  The current population of this Orange County suburb is approximately  3,113.  Beautiful lakes, exclusive gated neighborhoods, as well as a charming downtown community and excellent schools makes Windermere a very desirable place to call home.

Windermere is located on an isthmus, a narrow strip of land connecting two larger areas of land, usually having water on either side.  It is between several sand bottom, crystal clear, spring fed lakes in the Butler Chain of Lakes, which are all connected by a series of natural and man made canals. These breathtaking waterways have been recognized as “Outstanding Florida Waters” for it’s high water quality and creates a highly regarded place to enjoy the boating and fishing  lifestyle. Boasting some of Central Florida’s premiere fishing, water-skiing, wake-boarding and boating experiences.  The 5000+ acres of land that surround these gorgeous lakes and are encompassed by some of Orlando’s most prestigious neighborhoods and homes in the Windermere community.  With only two public access points, these exclusive lakes do not become overcrowded or congested.  Lake Butler is the largest lake of the Butler Chain of Lakes, offering boaters 1,665 acres of skiable waters. Bird Island is a popular spot for boaters to anchor up and enjoy the beautiful weather and sand bottom of Lake Butler.

With an average age of 41, 70% of the residents being married and 36.9% having children, Windermere is an excellent community to raise a family.  The children are served by the Orange County Public School System.  These “high tech” schools have all been awarded the “A” school status producing students that continue to achieve high levels of success in academics, athletics and the visual and performing arts.  Investing in their pupils, the schools have a 1 to 16.9% teacher student ratio, which reflects in the outstanding skill and dedication of their educators.  There is also the option of the Windermere Preparatory School, which is a private college preparatory school for students Pre K  through twelfth grades.  With a high school graduation  rate of 101.2%, with 61.4% continuing on an receiving their Bachelor’s Degrees and 29.4% obtaining a Graduate or Professional Degree this is a very influential, educated area.

The quaint community boasts three luxurious, premier Golf and Country Clubs; Isleworth, Keene’s Point and the Windermere Country Club.  With clubs of this caliber, there are immaculate estates and lavish mansions of diverse residents ranging from professional athletes and celebrities to wealthy first time home owners and part time occupants.  Located 14 miles southwest of Downtown Orlando, Windermere residents can partake in the big city life or in the enjoyment of world famous attractions, while returning home to the serenity of their guard gated communities that provide family and estate homes a safeguard of quiet small town living.

Windermere also prides itself in its historical sites, the Windermere Schoolhouse, which was built in 1890 and served the community from 1890 until 1916, then as the Armstrong Parramore House, a community center through 1923.  It has been renovated and is the oldest historical site in Windermere.  Cal Palmer’s Office Building, was completed in 1911 and was a headquarters for much of the growth and development in Windermere’s early years.   The Town Hall, which was constructed from 1922-1924, and began as The Women’s Club, these are all listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

In 1910, Dr. J.H. Johnson and J. C. Palmer formed the Windermere Improvement Company, giving this city a vision and leadership; homes were built and land was preserved for the development of Florida’s famous citrus groves. The population was 320 then and in 1925 it was incorporated as a town.
