Smile Mile

1421174144-tin1mAvR-2This Saturday, March 5th, 2016, you won’t want to miss the Smile Mile! This is a wonderful race that is a Track Shack Event and it is full of fun and entertainment. The Smile Mile will be taking place at the Orlando Fashion Square in Orlando, with the race starting on the East side of Macy’s—across from the post office on Herndon Avenue. What makes this Track Shack Event so unique is that it is a race open to all elementary school age students that are between the ages of five and eleven.

 

The Race Start Times will be run in heats for each age group. To find out when your child will be running in the Smile Mile event, visit the website here. The first race begins at 8:00 am and the last race begins at 11:20. So be ready for a full day of watching young ones run out all their energy. It is important to note that participants must report to the start of their age group race at least fifteen minutes prior to their race time.

 

It is important to know that this race does have restrictions. For appropriate safety reasons, parents, guardians, bicycles, roller skates, in-line skates, baby joggers/strollers, and dogs will be prohibited from the race course. Parents, there is no need to fret over your child participating in this event, as there are will be ample volunteers along the entire 1-mile route to ensure that each child is staying right on the course. Parents, guardians and friends are more than welcome to spectator viewing along the course.

 

Be prepared for some fun entertainment at the race. There will be loads of fun games and giveaways for everyone involved. All registered children in the Smile Mile will receive a t-shirt except for the children 4 and under—as their race is free. After the race, there will be Age Group Awards given to the top three boys and girls in each age group. Not to mention that all participants in the Smile Mile will receive medals, which are courtesy of the Mustane Family Charitable Trust. Another aware given out is the Coach “Sly” Johnson Participation Award. This award is dedicated to a coach and father who motivated countless of young runners. The award will go to one school from eah county that has the post runners participating. To be able to qualify for this second award, a school must have a minimum of 25 runners competing in the Smile Mile.

Race of the Runways

Don’t miss your chance to “race the runway” at Flagler County Airport this year in the annual Race of the Runways presented by Flagler County Airport. With a 5K, 15K, Walk and Kiddie Dash available, there is something for everyone as you come to this running event.

 

With entertainment including helicopters and planes above, everyone loves this flat, fast course where so many make their personal best. All the funds raise at this event are used by the Rotary Club of Flagler Beach for scholarships, food programs, toys for children in need at Christmas and for a variety of projects that include building new sports fields for the children of Bunnell, bringing clean water to African villages and working to eradicate Polio worldwide.

 

There will be a pre-check in event on Friday, Februrary 27th from 4pm to 6pm at the Flagler County Airport office—across from High Jackers restaurant. Race packets (bibs, etc.), Drawstring backpack and Goodie bags will be available. Please note, Drawstring backpacks and race packets are not guaranteed to late registrants. Please register early so that you get your size. You can preorder your breakfast for after the event, as it is the perfect reload after a super fun Airport 5K. Breakfast includes scrambled eggs, pancakes, bagels, sausage, orange juice and fruit. Kids under 10 will receive the breakfast for free!

 

This race will be professionally timed and scored by Red Pointer Productions. Disposable electronic chips will be attached to your bib number. In order to obtain the best read possible, you will need to wear your bib number unaltered on the front of your shirt pinned at all four corners. It is important that you do not have any clothing covering your bib number. Results will be posted onsite of the race and also online concluding the event at redpointerrunning.com.

The Sicilian Tenors – Amore!

You don’t want to miss The Sicilian Tenors – Amore! at the Flagler Auditorium this February 16th, 2016. Beginning at 7:30pm, you will be delighted as the Sicilian Tenors take you on a romantic journey from Hollywood to Broadway to Italy. This show could be considered as “The Three Tenors meets The Rat Pack,” but it is so much more than that! Watch as the Sicilian Tenors bring together three marvelous tenor voices singing their own interpretations of the world’s best music. While Aaron Caruso, Elio Scaccio, and Sam Vitale are talented singers by themselves, combined they are The Sicilian Tenors!

 

Aaron Caruso studied Opera in Italy and New York and has preformed Mozart’s Bastien und Bastienne, La Boheme and operatic concerts with excerpts from: La Traviata, Tosca, and I Pagliacci. Just recently Aaron was chosen to sing the role of Mario Lanza on Broadway. Aaron is known for his charisma and showmanship which demonstrate his complete mastery of the art of entertaining.

 

Elio Scaccio has been a performing artist since early childhood and his essentially been singing his entire life. Elio Scaccio released his pop-classical debut CD, Lettere D’Amore in the spring of 2010. While he is classically trained, the CD comprises of original compositions alongside well-known Italian classics. In late 2010, a Spanish version of the CD was released.

 

Sam Vitale is also classically trained and has performed the lead tenor roles in Carmen, Tosca, La Traviata, L’Elisher d’Amore, Don Giovanni (performed in Cortona, Italy), The Phantom of the Opera, and Pagliacci. Vitale is also a proud veteran of Desert Storm.

Run 4 Love 4 Mile Presented by Florida Hospital

Come along for another Track Shack Event, Run 4 Love 4 Mile Presented by Florida Hospital. Whether you are single, married, or in a complicated relationship, Run 4 Love 4 Mile is the perfect event for those who have a love of running and walking to improve their health and livelihood. Held on Saturday, February 13th—just one day before Valentine’s Day—Run 4 Love 4 Mile takes place at Winter Park, Florida starting at 7:30 am. For this race, you will have to be partnered up with someone—your sole mate—whether it is your significant other, your mother, your sister, your uncle, or even an ex-lover!

 

The day begins with the 5K starting exactly at 7:30 am, so make sure your sneakers are laced up for the event. Enjoy the scenery of the event as you run around the pines with just a little extra love. This is a kid friendly event as well as, following the 5K, there is a Health 100 Kids’ Run beginning at 8:45 am. Students are encouraged to compete for school spirit and earn money for their PTA.

 

After all the races are over, be sure to stick around for the wonderful awards ceremony which includes a competition for the Sole Mate Challenge that awards the 2-person team with the fastest times for the 1. Men, 2. Women, and 3. Coed Divisions. And you will have to dress up for the Best Outfit Contest! There are no rules on the theme and a committee of judges will give $250 in cash and prizes to the individual and team.

 

It is noted that bicycles, roller skates, in-line skates and dogs are prohibited from the race course. The use of headphones is highly discouraged. Stroller/jogger operators start behind the designated stroller signage and may not walk/jog no faster than 15 miles per minute—a safe operating speed. The Track Shack’s mission is keeping Central Florida fit, and while walkers are encouraged to participate in all Track Shack races, the municipalities require that roadways are clear of participants and opened as soon as the race is complete. There is a maximum pace of 16 miles per mile set and the pace needs to be maintained, otherwise race officials will ask you to move to the sidewalk to reopen the roadways.

Birds of a Feather Festival

You don’t want to miss the Birds of a Feather Festival coming to Flagler County! Spanning three days, from February 5th—February 7th 2016, come enjoy a weekend of birding, workshops, presentations, kayak trips and family activities. This City of Palm Coast event is geared toward serious birders—as well as beginners and families.

 

The Birds of a Feather Fest is the brainchild of Palm Coast residents and birding enthusiasts Jason and Mary Giraulo. Jason Giraulo is the City’s Digital Communication Coordinator and Director of the festival.  Participants can choose as much or as little as they’d like over the three days, and some activities are free. 32 birding trips and classes will be offered, to such outstanding birding spots as Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and Princess Place Preserve. The festival also offers plenty of activities for non-birders, too.  There are even kayak trips and craft projects for the little ones.

 

Flagler County is a birder’s paradise, featuring more than 125 miles of hiking, biking and walking trails, miles of coastline, varied habitats and more than 200 identified species. There are very few places that offer as many wonderful opportunities to enjoy nature all while being so connected, accessible and clean.

 

The City of Palm Coast is seeking volunteers for the Birds of a Feather Fest. Volunteer tasks will include assisting speakers, staffing registration and information booths, and providing program support. Time slots are flexible and available throughout the day. Below are descriptions for the volunteer opportunities that are available. All volunteers must attend mandatory training in November and undergo a background check. First Friday

Come celebrate at Flagler Beach each month for First Friday. Coming up this Friday, February 5th, 2016, you will be able to enjoy tons of great happenings at Flagler Beach for this month’s First Friday. This is an all day event that will keep you on your toes with the plethora of events that are available!

 

Flagler Beach celebrates their town with free live music, local vendors, kids activities and a magnificently beautiful place to bring your friends and family. Enjoy fun games, raffles, shopping and treats! With museums and businesses staying open late to support First Fridays in the City of Flagler Beach, they play ‘hostess with the mostess’ the both the visitors and locals of the area. Flagler Beach hopes that you will make First Fridays your first choice each first Friday of the month to visit. Flagler Beach is dedicated to putting the family back in its name.

 

With parking available in the Farmer’s Market Parking Lot, there is also acceptance of donations in the lot. City of Flagler Beach is always looking for awesome volunteers who can make this event a success each month by being an enjoyable evening for everyone in attendance.

Florida Hospital Lady Track Shack 5K

Don’t miss the Florida Hospital Lady Track Shack 5K this Saturday, January 30th. Hosted at the Loch Haven Park in Orlando. The Florida Hospital Lady Track Shack 5K is featured as a Track Shack Event and is for ladies only! For over thirty years, this Track Shack event has brought together mothers and daughters, and sisters and friends to celebrate women’s health and fitness. You will want to sign up early for this event, as there are only 3,700 spots available. On the morning of January 30th, you will need to arrive before 7:30 am to get prepared for the 5K Run/Walk Challenge. This is a little over 3 miles long, so wear appropriate shoes!

 

Enjoy your run or walk through the beautiful Loch Haven Park where you will pass by Track shack and two glorious lakes on the route, Lake Highland and Lake Formosa. Along the way, you can stop and enjoy two water breaks and some great live DJ entertainment. And once you cross that finish line, you will receive a medal for your hard work. This is a kid friendly event as well with a Kids’ Run directly after the 5K at 8:45 am. Following the Kids’ Run, there will be an Awards Presentation along with refreshments as you cool down from your run.

 

Your participation in this event includes some special perks. As soon as you register—it is highly recommended to pre-register—you will receive a Raw Threads super-soft, short sleeve, tech tee, a bracelet from Momentum, and a medal! The Raw Threads Tech shirt is the most popular style and is made with performance jersey along with being lightweight, breathable temperature regulating and more.

 

This 5K challenge that is a part of the Track Shack events is all about raising money for local women who do not have the resources or income to where they can receive annual mammograms or other diagnostic screenings. With your participation, you will be helping these women so they can rest safely knowing they have assistance for this type of care. When you raise $135 in this 5K, you are providing a mammogram to one uninsured woman. This one uninsured woman is among a larger number of women who desperately need help through the Florida Hospital Breast Cancer Care Fund. To be an advocate for uninsured women, you can fund a mammogram just by including the hashtag #FundaMammo in your post. The winner for raising the most money for mammograms will be announced January 26, 2016.

MarathonFest

Get ready for MarathonFest! It includes the fun of half and full Marathon training for Spring races such as Half-Marathons, Big Sur, Flying Pig, and Boston. You are also welcome to join this advanced training program for maintenance running in great weather. With the Winter/Spring Session running between January 19th, 2016 through May 15, 2016, you will be going through a 3-day-a-week advanced training program designed for the Half and Full Marathon distance. Please note that this program is designed for Alumni runners, Boston Qualifiers, or any seasoned runners who have recently completed a full or half marathon.

 

The program offers three workouts each week that will target speed, strength and endurance. As this is an increased intensity from the Summer/Fall program, the Winter/Spring session of MarathonFest is not recommended for novice runners. Runners who are interested in taking on MarathonFest should currently be running at the very least three or more days a week at an average of 15 to 20 miles a week. Also, interested participants must have recently completed a full or half marathon. The three-day-a-week schedule is created for many runners to achieve their running goals, in addition the training schedule is also easily integrated with additional run days for runners who desire higher mileages.

 

Training for MarathonFest begins Tuesday, January 19th, 2016. Be sure to register early. On that first Tuesday, simply show up for the first workout. Weekday workouts are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays and last approximately one hour. It is advised for you to arrive between 20 to 30 minutes early to warm up before the weekday workouts begin. There is also a weekend run held on Saturday morning, with the first Saturday run beginning at 5:45 am. The following weekend runs will be contingent on which Pace Group you are in, but expect workout times to begin anywhere from 4am to 6am.

 

Keep in mind that MarathonFest doesn’t stop for anything. Be expected to run in the rain, the cold, the heat, the humidity, and the wind. Very rarely does the weather prevent from a training run. As weather in Florida is impossible to predict, coaches will wait until the very last moment to call of a workout. If there is inclement weather, the coaches will always be present at each scheduled workout to determine the safety for the run. In the rare case of a cancellation of a run, it will be posted to the MarathonFest Facebook page immediately.

A Touch of Paris Comes to Port Orange

January 2nd, 2016

Don’t miss as A Touch of Paris Comes to Port Orange on Wednesday, January 6th, 2016. This event begins at 7:00 PM and runs until 8:30 PM. Join local author and poet Dan Pels as he launches a series of literary and cultural evenings at Peter’s Wine Shop in Port Orange. The public is invited to enjoy poetry and a discussion of cultural topics.

 

Aside from Dan Pels, other guests will include New Smyrna Beach poetry and workshop teacher Bob Calabrese and Holly Hill poet and arts organizer Fred Booth. Pels grew up in Paris and though he has lived most his life in the United States, he still admires the tradition of salon evenings where a wide range of people—whether they be artists, writers or those interesting in a good conversation—can come together and sip fine wine and enjoy themselves.

 

A Touch of Paris will be held at Peter’s Wine Shop located at 1665 Dunlawton Avenue. It opened in July of 2009 and is a full service wine store and wine bar that also supports the arts. There will be an excellent selection of French wine as well as other bottles from around the world for sale at $5 a glass and up.

 

Come be part of the discussion with local author and poet Dan Pels as the discussion is always free. More importantly though, the poetry is priceless.
